History & Notable Milestones
  1. A Passion for Golf

Raleigh Country Club needed help. The member-owned property was struggling financially and developers were swooning over its desirable central location near downtown Raleigh. To save Donald Ross’ final golf course design from extinction, John McConnell acquired the club and the McConnell Golf story began. Over the next few years facilities were improved and operations become more efficient, ensuring the longevity of Raleigh Country Club and establishing a winning strategy for growth.

  2. What is "pure golf"?

At McConnell Golf it means providing the best overall experience from top to bottom. Our greens are hand-rolled, practice facilities extensive, courses ranked among the region’s best and the personal service our members receive is unsurpassed. After the 2006 additions of top-rated Treyburn Country Club and The Cardinal by Pete Dye, McConnell expanded into South Carolina in 2007 with Musgrove Mill Golf Club. The quality of these pristine courses further expanded our members’ ability to quench their passion for pure golf with a single membership.

  3. Play Where the Pros Play

Seventy years after the inaugural Greensboro Open in 1938, Sedgefield Country Club once again hosts the contest now known as the Wyndham Championship. Each year since, crowds gather to watch exciting players such as Webb Simpson, Davis Love III and Tiger Woods battle for the Sam Snead Cup. North Carolina golf fans also mark their calendars for the Korn Ferry Tour’s REX Hospital Open, hosted each year at The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh.

  4. Efficiency for a Brighter Tomorrow

There’s no question it takes substantial resources to keep our courses gleaming green through the summer months. To make these efforts most efficient, McConnell Golf piloted a reverse osmosis irrigation system in 2012 which is still in place today. This, along with Audubon certification and our commitment to natural habitat areas, ensures we do our part for the planet so clubs like The Reserve on Pawleys Island continue to fit seamlessly into their natural surroundings.

  5. Fit for the Whole Family

The grand opening of Wakefield Plantation’s fitness center in 2014 completed McConnell Golf’s fourth state-of-the-art fitness facility. In combination with recent renovations to the spacious fitness rooms of Treyburn Country Club, Sedgefield Country Club and Old North State Club the addition continued to broaden McConnell Golf’s offering beyond the game itself. Committed to health and wellness for the whole family a series of renovations, such as the pool at Brook Valley Country Club in Greenville, North Carolina, ensures our clubs set the standard for healthy family lifestyles.

  6. A Golf Network from Sea to Summit

Adding both Country Club of Asheville in Asheville, North Carolina and Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, Tennessee to its ranks in 2015, McConnell Golf extends member access to the Smoky Mountains. Anchored along Interstate 40, these two Donald Ross designs join Raleigh Country Club and Sedgefield Country Club to form a chain of four Ross-designed golf courses.

  7. The Queen City Connection

Join us in welcoming Providence Country Club of Charlotte, North Carolina to the McConnell Golf family. Beyond its stunning golf course and full realm of amenities, Providence enables McConnell Golf to achieve an important geographical milestone. Each McConnell-owned property, save the farthest west and the farthest southeast, now boasts two or more sister clubs within a two hour drive.

  8. Coastal Expansion

Reciprocal access became even sweeter for McConnell Golf members when a partnership with Porters Neck Country Club in Wilmington, North Carolina was established. McConnell Golf was selected to manage the club, which is tucked away along the Intracoastal Waterway and features full-service amenities anchored by a magnificent Tom Fazio-designed golf course.

    Porters Neck Ownership

In May 2019, Porters Neck Country Club selected McConnell Golf Alliance, the private club operations division of McConnell Golf, to manage the club. McConnell Golf officially acquired Porters Neck for purchase in August 2020. Porters Neck is nestled along the Intracoastal Waterway just minutes from local beaches and historic downtown Wilmington. The club’s centerpiece is its highly regarded, Tom Fazio-designed golf course that debuted in 1991, which has played host to multiple Carolinas Golf Association and Carolinas PGA championships.

    Virginia Footprint

In December 2020, McConnell Golf expanded its footprint across the southeast with the purchase of The Water’s Edge Country Club in Penhook, Virginia. Beyond its 36,000 square foot clubhouse, The Water’s Edge members enjoy an extensive variety of amenities including golf, tennis, swimming, fitness, boating, fishing and horseback riding. McConnell Golf President & CEO John McConnell started playing at The Water’s Edge with friends in the early 1990s. It has been his family’s ‘home away from home’ for 25 years.

  10. Growth in Eastern North Carolina

Wilson Country Club and its golf course, designed by William Byrd, joined the McConnell Golf portfolio in the summer of 2023. Wilson CC opened in May 1915 on the site that is currently known as Willow Springs Country Club in Wilson, NC. Following WWII, membership grew rapidly. Unable to expand the facilities, the club moved across town in 1973. John LaFoy, a renowned architect, renovated the greens in 2005 to update the layout and enhance the putting surfaces. Post-acquisition, McConnell Golf renovated the club’s interior, preserving the club’s design while improving its aesthetic.
